Japanese lengends say that Japan was founded in 600 BC by Emperor Jimmu, who apparently was a direct descendant of the sun goddess, and ancestor to the current imperial family.

However, history shows that people inhabited Japan since around 10,000 BC, and they were hunter/gatherers. The Chinese wrote stories about Japan, calling it " Yamatai". Around 400 BC, Japan had already established a form of monarchical government. Their government changed very little throughout the next 1600 years.

Budhism was introduced in Japan around 500 AD
