History Of Laos

     -Countries that Controlled Laos-

-In the early 1200's Laos Kingdoms began to fall under the leadership of the Cambodian Empire.

-In the beginning of the 1800's the divided kingdoms of Laos all came under the power of Siam,now Thailand.

-Near the end of the 1800's Laos began its transition to France. By 1907 Laos was under the control of the French.

-From 1939 to 1945 Laos was occupied by Japan.

-For about a year Laos was free until the French gained power, once again.

-In 1953 Laos was an independent, free country.

     -Wars that Laos Participated In-

 -In 1957 a coalition government was formed.

 -The coalition collapsed and a civil war started in 1959.

 -In 1962 another coalition government was formed.

-This form of governement,again, failed and one year later fighting resumed.

      -Laos tried to remain neutral during the Vietnam War in order to avoid conflict

     -America targeted places in Laos because it provided a place for supplies and troops to be moved into South Vietnam.

     -Historical Events-

-In 1975 Pathet Leo gained power and a monarchy was abolished in Laos.

-In 1997 Laos joined ASEAN, Association of Southeast Asian Nations,its members promotes social, economic, and cultural growth and cooperation.
