On August 15, 1947 the Partition of British India occures, and India achieves independence and incorporates West Bengal and Assam.  Jawaharlal Nehru becomes prime minister of India. Battle of Plassey

June 23rd, 1757, in the little village of Plassey the forces of the East India Company under Robert Clive met the army of Siraj-ud-Doula, the Nawab of Bengal.  Robert Clive had 800 Europeans and 2200 Indians, but Siraj-ud-doula and his army was said to have about 50,000 men with a train of heavy artillery.  During the battle a heavy storm hit, soaking both sides, including the Indian's gun powder.  The Indians charged in hope that the Europeans army had suffered the same draw-back, but they were sadly surprised when they were ambushed by open fire.  The battle didn't last more than a few hours, leaving Clive with the throne.  This was the beginning of the British rule.
